Why disability inclusion is great for business

Will is living proof — disability inclusion can be a great business decision.

Will has become a role model for people with disability, but no one is more surprised than him, considering the apprehension and lack of confidence he once had.

"I definitely struggled with anxiety and socialising a lot, but my service provider, Rocky Bay, helped me get out of my comfort zone, really helped discover who I was," Will said.

"I was quite surprised of what I could achieve and what I could bring to the table."

Will is now a Local Area Coordination support officer with the employment project at APM Communities.

"Being offered a job at APM, I was over the moon, so excited because I realised that I can finally join an inclusive workplace and feel like I really contribute to something."

And Will’s passion for inclusivism is personal.

"As a person with autism, I just wanted to spread the inclusion and awareness that anyone with the disability has a chance to have employment and to do what they like as well."

Ellie and Will

It can be seem overwhelming for an organisation to approach APM regarding hiring someone with disability, but as someone who’s experienced how rewarding the results can be, Will encourages businesses to explore this option.

"Definitely join one of the workshops that we attend and run. Feel free to join our virtual employment supports information sessions we run every month too and we would gladly be able to help with that."

Gaining employment was a milestone achievement for Will, and his experience demonstrates how successful the process of hiring people with disability can be.

"It shows that customised employment is most definitely possible, not just for me, but for any person with a disability.

"And I'm just glad I can be the role model for it."

In this incredible series, Ellie sat down with team members from across APM to discuss how their own experience with disability motivates and inspires them to support people with disability.
